About the Sailing Crew

Your typical Sankofa Odyssey yacht consists of a Captain, First Mate, and possibly a Second mate.

The Captain:
Always thinking in advance, The Captain is in charge of operating the boat and providing safe passage from location to location. The Captain is also responsible for guaranteeing the boat is safely anchored or moored properly for the night. As such, when onboard, the Captains word is law. Also, weather, water depth, access to emergency services, and comfort are taken into consideration when decisions are made by the Captain.

First Mate:
The First Mate assist the Captain in all duties described above. In addition, the First Mate is able to take over for the Captain when necessary.

Second Mate:
The Second Mate is in training to become a First Mate. Second Mates assist the First Mate and Captain with operation of the boat. As a participant on a Sankofa Odyssey adventure, you are part of the crew. As such, you have the opportunity to get involved when desired. Crew members can help sail, anchor, or maintain the boat.
