What’s so great about sailing?

Sailing is one of the most ancient forms of transportation know to human kind. The ancient Egyptians built the great pyramids by sailing many of the necessary resources up the Nile River against the currents.

Sailing vessels were used by merchants and slaves to move crop between the colonies during and after the formation of the United States.

As a sailor, you will share in a rich unique heritage that has contributed to the development of great civilizations and the transformation of the world.

And if that does not inspire you, you are guaranteed to be inspired by just the pure amount of fun you will have.

What if I don't have sailing experience?

Not necessary. All you need is a positive attitude and a willingness to help out. Your Captain and first mate will be happy to get you involved in some basic sailing activities. Before it’s all over you may even be able to take control of the helm (that’s the big steering wheel on a boat). However, if you choose not to participate in the sailing activities, your Captain and first mate have everything under control and you spend your time relaxing, listening to your favorite tunes, reading a book, of just checking out the incredible scenery.

What kind of people normally go on a Sankofa Odyssey trip?

From Doctors and entertainers to bankers and musicians. From CEOs and Sales reps to Public Speakers and writers - Odyssey-ers come from all walks of life and professions, and even different countries.

However the one thing they all have in common is that they love to explore new cultures, meet new people and have a great time doing it. The chemistry is always great and even when there is a disagreement, it's usually over with before it's realized. That's what a little grog and paradise does to people!

Is there anything I can do to be prepared?

Make sure you take a look at the FAQ page on the Sankofa Odyssey website. A few folks have taken basic lessons in the past but that’s not necessary at all. The only absolute requirement is to be ready to have fun.
