Virgin Islands FAQs

Safety First!

The very first thing we do before every adventure is provide a detailed safety briefing for the entire crew.

The Captains of Sankofa Odyssey have a combined 25 years of sailing experience, and have sailed all over the world. And since Sankofa Odyssey began 7 years ago we have completed over 15 adventures without a single incident. A 100% positive safety record. (Ok I did stub my toe once)

Will I Need a Passport/Visa?

For stays of up to 90 days, there are no visa requirements for citizens of the U.S. or Canada carrying a US or Canadian Passport. A foreigner with a residence card for the U.S. is not exempt from the above requirements and should consult their Consulate for information.

Where should I fly to and then what do I do after I arrive?

Don't worry. We will tell you exactly where to go and what to do. Please fly into either Saint Thomas (airport code STT) or into Beef Island (airport code EIS). If you fly into Saint Thomas you must take a taxi to the ferry dock then catch the ferry to Road Town on Tortola. This can be a really fun experience as you will be traveling with locals as well as other Sankofa Odyssey participants. Once you arrive into Road Town , we will arrange for you to be picked up and taken to your boat.

If you fly into Beef Island, we will arrange for someone to pick you up and bring you directly to your boat.

You must arrive into Road Town Tortola by 12 on the day your sail begins . We will return to Tortola on Tuesday10 AM and again on Saturday by 10 AM . You can schedule your return flights for late Tuesday or Saturday afternoon or later. Many of us will likely stay a couple extra days in either Tortola or St. John at our own expense. Both isalands are incredibly beautiful and suggest you hang around if you can.

What is Bareboating?

"Bareboating" refers to a chartering a yacht that you sail yourself. Most bareboats are from 30 to 50 feet in length and you can charter a conventional single hulled yacht (monohull), a catamaran or a powerboat. Sailing yachts are far more popular, and common, than powerboats. Bareboats come equipped with everything needed to operate them from kitchen utensils to towels, sheets and bedding.

What if I don't have sailing experience?
Not necessary. All you need is a positive attitude and a willingness to help out.

What kind of people normally go on a Sankofa Odyssey trip?
From Doctors and entertainers to bankers and musicians. From CEOs and Sales reps to Public Speakers and writers Odyssey-ers come from all walks of life and professions, and even different countries. However the one thing they all have in common is that they love to explore new cultures, meet new people and have a great time doing it. The chemistry is always great and even when there is a disagreement it's usually over with before it's realized. That's what paradise does to people!

What if I get seasick?
Even some of our Captains and crew get a little queasy on the first day. But after that, your body adjust very quickly. The main thing is not to let sea sickness get in the way of having the time of your life. All of our past participants have found a way to not got sea sick and you will too. Some great tips on understanding seasickness, treatment, and prevention are available here: seasickness.co.uk.

How should I dress?
Click here for a PACKING LIST. Bring, casual, "quick-dry" clothing, shoes/sandals w/ non-skid soles (in the sailing tradition, it is a kindness to the boat owner to wear non-marking soles as well), swimwear, windbreaker, sunglasses w/ strap, hat w/strap.

What else should I bring?
Click here for a PACKING LIST. Bring, clothespins, personal toiletries/medications, assorted plastic bags (ziplock, supermarket), H2O-proof flashlight, H20-proof disp camera, comfortable walking/hiking shoes, sailing gloves and inexpensive rain jacket/pants, are helpful. It doesn't hurt to bring Dramamine or other over-the-counter motion-sickness medicine.

How are meals arranged?
We all share in the cooking. Each captain has a slightly different arrangement for meals. You will get the opportunity to share your dietary requirements with your Captain. It's ok if you don't do dairy, meat, or are totally vegan. There will plenty for you. Contact your individual captain for details.
